Obituary

Angeline J. McNeil, 105, died peacefully in Roswell, GA February 10, 2019.

A.J. (Angie/Ann) was born at home in Chicago, IL as Anela Josephina Nowakowski (Angeline Josephine Novak) on October 5, 1913. She was the first American-born child and only daughter of Michael Novak and Josephine Masters, who were Polish immigrants. She had three brothers: Michael, Joseph and John, who all predeceased her.

She was raised and educated in Chicago and attended business college, receiving a Secretarial Certificate. Her favorite memories of living in Chicago were horseback riding, picnics in the park, and going to dance clubs. She was a life-long animal lover, always having dogs and cats in her home.

On March 30, 1940, she married widower Ralph Glenn McNeil (deceased 1977) and helped raise his daughter, Helena (now deceased.) During WWII, while her husband was serving at the Pentagon, she became a volunteer nurse for the Red Cross in Washington, DC. Their only child together, Joanne, was born there.

A.J., her husband and their daughter moved to the Chicago suburb of Naperville, IL, where A.J. worked as a medical administrative assistant at Edwards Hospital and later at McCormick Labs in Chicago and Hinsdale, IL.

After retirement at age 75, A.J. resided for twenty years in the Phoenix, AZ area, where she became an active member of the Congregational Church of Sun City. From 2009 to 2013, she lived at Bentley Commons in Keene, NH, near her daughter in Brattleboro, VT. In 2013, she moved to the Memphis, TN area to be close to her granddaughter, Stefanie, and her family. When they moved to East Cobb County, GA, in February 2018, A.J. moved to The Phoenix at Roswell nearby.

Her secret to a long life: loving her family.

A.J. is survived by her daughter, Joanne McNeil Hayes, of Brattleboro, VT; granddaughter, Stefanie (and Chandler) Johnson and great-grandson, Derrick Johnson, of Marietta, GA; and grandson, Andrew (and Wednesday) Hayes, of Valley Glen, CA. Additionally, she is survived by four step-grandchildren: Brenda Marcy, Judy Silvers, William Terrill and Elizabeth Whitaker, and their families.

A memorial service will be held on February 13, 2019, 3:00 p.m. at Northside Chapel, 12050 Crabapple Rd, Roswell, GA 30075.
