Mrs. Sarah Lee Payne Manning, age 100, of Alpharetta died Tuesday, March 5, 2013.
The funeral service will be held on Friday March 8th at 11 AM at the Alpharetta First United Methodist Church with her remains placed in state at 10:30 AM. Visitation will be held at Northside Chapel Funeral Directors, 12050 Crabapple Rd., Roswell, 770-645-1414, on Thursday March 7 from 2PM to 4PM and from 6PM to 8PM.
Sarah was the daughter of Levy Ezra Payne and Emma Olivia Moor Payne and was born in Duluth, Georgia. She is preceded in death by her husband of 49 years Simeon Newton Manning, her sister Frances P. Corley and brother, Joseph Payne.
She is survived by her son Joe Frank Manning (Shirley) of Pine Mountain and daughters Ann M. White and Susan M. Niolon (Joe) of Alpharetta, eight grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren, a niece and three nephews.
Sarah was a 1933 graduate of LaGrange College with a degree in English. She was an active member of the Atlanta Alumni Chapter and served on the Board of Trustees for the college. She retired from the Fulton County Board of Education after teaching elementary school in Alpharetta for 25 years. Sarah was a faithful member of the Alpharetta First United Methodist Church since 1934 and was heavily involved with the Fidelis Sunday School Class, 54 and More, the Mary Elkins UMW Circle and many other church activities.
As the matriarch of her large family, Sarah leaves a legacy rich with tradition and love.
