Obituary:
Herman “Jake” Gaston Echols Jr., age 85, of Sharpsburg, GA left to be with his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, March 6, 2013. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and follower of Christ. Jake was born in Forsyth County on June 7, 1927, but lived most of his life in the Sandy Springs and Buckhead communities. He served in the Navy during World War II. Upon discharge in 1947, he was hired by King Hardware in Buckhead. This began a successful career in the hardware industry which lasted for over 50 years. Other companies included Sandy Springs True Value and Roswell Ace Hardware, from which he retired in 2000. He was a charter member of First Christian Church of Roswell, where he also served as Treasurer and declared Elder Emeritus. Most recently, he was an active member of Christ’s Church at Whitewater in Fayetteville, GA and an active member of the Lamplighter Sunday School class. Jake is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Nellie Anderson Echols; son and daughter-in-law, David and Pam Echols of Canton, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Jenny and Blair Walker of Sharpsburg, GA; sister, Stella (Glenn) Caswell of Canton, GA; grandchildren Monica E. Oliveira (Jim), Mandy E. Robinson (Shannon), Blair Seth Walker (Anna), and Forrest Jacob Walker; great-grandchildren Isabelle Robinson, Atticus Oliveira and Micah Robinson. He was preceded in death by his sister, Thelma Rainey, and brother, Clifford L. “Tip” Echols. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at Journey Christian Church (formerly First Christian Church of Roswell), 11365 Crabapple Road, Roswell, he will be placed in state at the church at 10:00 am. The family will receive friends Friday, March 8, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Northside Chapel Funeral Directors in Roswell, 12050 Crabapple Road.
